How to get rid of vermin?

August 30th, 2010 2 comments

There are several racoons and cats that live in my mom’s neighborhood. Apparently no one owns the cats, which eat dog food from backyards. One of the cats scratched/bit me when I found it living in my mother’s garden shed. Now I have to get rabies shots. The racoons tip over garbage cans.

How do we get rid of these pests?
Animal control has put out some traps, but they don’t seem to work. I’d like advice about poisons, traps, and deterents.
There are about 10 cats that seem to wander the neighborhood, and 3 racoons. The cats are really more of a problem.

Is there anything I can do to perk up my mower after the winter?

I forgot to add fuel stabilizer in the fall before storing my Craftsman push mower in my garden shed. I live in Iowa. Now my mower is sputtering and running pretty rough. Are there any fuel additives I can use to perk it up? I don’t want to mess around with draining the gas and adding fresh gas. It ran just fine last fall.

how important is a grassed garden?

i am moving house and found one that would be perfect, except for one thing. the garden has a vERY small patio area, a shed and then a stoned parking area. the road is too busy to park on it, so i’d need the space. but i have a 9 month old daughter, would grass be essential for her next summer? we currently live in a house with two very large lawns, but don’t really use them!

We have a cement block out building that used to be a chicken coop long ago. I would like to fix it up for next Spring as either a coop or a garden shed. There is a huge black snake living in the building – what is a humane way of getting him to leave?
