Power Supply for shed ?

April 1st, 2011 3 comments

I had a shed built by a builder but he left before the job is finished (Don’t they all!) He did run an 3-core(?) + earth armoured cable underneath the garden between the main dwelling (back of the house in a outside connection box) and the shed, but both sides unconnected. On the inside of the house, there is a Twin&Earth cable running between the consumer unit with a 32A MCB and the connection box, outside the house. I want to know if I need a separate consumer unit in the shed to power a ring main (for power tools) and a lighting circuit, fed from the armoured cable. I presume if this is what’s required, I would need a 5A for the lighting circuit and a 32A for the ring main. Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you think this would be a cute playhouse? 10×16?

We have a garden shed we are going to be refurbishing for the kids, this is what I was thinking for exterior, do you think it would still be neat later or do you think other people who may buy our house in say 5 years may hate it? Its for 4 kids who are currently all under 4 years old so we wanted to really make it kind of magical.

hopefully one of the links works!
I am trying to make a cottage look you know with vining plants growing on the rock and stuff. I honestly and not too worried about much else besides my kids loving it and it not being hot pink which is my daughter and sons fav color right now. If they had their way it would be scary in a year lol.

How to build outdoor pet enclosure?

January 27th, 2011 1 comment

I hate to have to do this but it’s the only option at the moment. We had a tornado come through about a week or so ago & it tore up our entire back fence & parts of the side & our roof. Now the pets are MY responsibility & so I have to pay for everything for them. Food, bedding, litter, etc. Well during the day all of our pets go outside w/ supervision of course, however now they cannot because of the fence. I’m in a pinch I need to build a temporary enclosure for them. I’ve been having to put them on the chain & I hate doing that & the cats like to climb & they almost hung themselves today.

Luckily I was only a few feet away from them. Anyway, I’ve got to pay for the fence since it was to keep the pets in the yard to begin with & I don’t have the money at the moment. I don’t have a job, I use my allowance to pay for their basic stuff & do odd jobs when I can. I’ve got a job lined up in about 2 weeks but I need something now. My dogs are little so I don’t need chain link, chicken/poultry wire will be enough.

It’s mainly for my cats, the dogs can stay on the chains outside for the next week or so if they have to. I’m going to add it onto the end of our garden shed which is being renovated into my bedroom. I plan for it to be at least 10′ x 10′ x 6′. Will this be big enough for a temporary enclosure? Also, should I use 2×4′s or metal? Which one is cheaper & should I use U nails? Will they be able to dig under gravel? I don’t have enough money to buy blocks. I know it’s a lot of q’s but I want them to be free & safe.

What gardening/lawn product would work best?

December 23rd, 2010 3 comments

Ny bf’s backyard is mostly a patio. with a small shed & a little pond. We are planning to go back there and fix it up but, weeds and grass are between the "spaces" on the deck. He’s afraid if we clean it all up it will just all grow back, but I’m sure there is some kind of spray or something we could place out there to prevent that. Any suggestions?

it is ridiculous to have to get a permit for a diy shed such as this one. Is it true?

How do I make a wooden shed with tin roof ( Think human-sized/extra-large dog house ) cooler?

November 26th, 2010 1 comment

I live in Florida, where 95 degrees outside isn’t uncommon.

How do I lower the temp inside my simple six foot tall, six foot wide and seven foot long wooden plank shed ( with tin roof ) as so that it would be suitable for a shelter for a couple indoor cats tossed outside due to family allergies?

There is no door so I imagined having a screened door and constructing window holes with screens would create a bit of a draft and allow air to circulate.

The floor is constructed of square outdoor garden slabs ’tiles’ together. Unfortunately these are not sheer concrete, which would be a bit cooler on feet.

Any ideas besides -constant- fresh water, the door, screens and taking them out of there for fresh air every moment I can?

Or-
Would it be more economic, make greater sense & be better for them just to build a whole new cattery that’s mostly screen/chicken wire with supports, a roof and maybe one side attached to an exterior wall of the house?

I appreciate your kind responses.
