I need some Suggestions Please?

March 26th, 2011 3 comments

We’ve just bought our first house.. we’ve never really lived anywhere that we could garden or anything.. so Ive no idea where to start.. i have alot of questions and need alot of suggestions.. We live in western Oklahoma.. Theres a very large mimosa tree in front of our house, and a small garden area along the walk going to the house, which the previous owners filled with rocks.. But id like to put some plants in.. our back yard isn’t huge, but big enough, theres no trees or anything in it right now. theres a nice size Pergola sitting area, and a small barn looking tool shed. Theres not really any garden areas in the back just grass and weeds (goatheads bleh) I’d like to begin making plans for spring, so i don’t decide what plants i want when its already too late to plant them. Everything needs to be dog friendly since they will be spending the most time out there.
I’d like to attract some birds.. my mother in law lives a block over and they have tons of birds in there yard year round..but of course they also have 3 large trees.. They don’t feed them, but we plan on putting up some feeders soon.. A tree that stays smallish or a shrub or something will help attract birds and give them a place to hide would be nice.. maybe something that stays green in the winter, but not like a pine tree..? Plants that don’t need constant tending would be nice as well.
I was told marigolds will help keep bugs/mosquito’s away from the sitting area, is this true? i loved marigolds growing up so i would like some either way, but should i plant them in pots or in the ground? it can be really windy here, would they be ok in hanging pots? i also would like some tulips but i think those should have been planted around October right? My boyfriend would like to cover the pergola in vines of some sort.. but i think that would just invite bugs wouldn’t it?
I’d like some flowering plants but not too many as i don’t want to attract bees if i can help it and i was told they will already be attracted to our mimosa tree. Also we have a pet rabbit so I’m thinking a small vegetable garden would be nice for her, possibly even set up so we could let her loose in it once in awhile.. are raised gardens beds better? i know they would be easier to tend to but what are other benefits/disadvantages? I’m sorry this is really long.. and sorta of all over the place.. Thanks in advance for any suggestions..

If your teenage daughter were to sleep in the backyard cabin at night how would you feel as a parent?

If your teenage daughter were to sleep in your backyard garden shed/treehouse would you come by and make sure the door was closed and lights were out?
A teenage girl I know wants to sleep in her parents garden shed/garage on some weekends? Her mother wants to make sure the door is closed and lights are out for her safety. The garage/garden shed is a seperate building from the house. The girl enjoys this place as indendance. Even though her parents worry about her for her safety she doesn’t like the idea that her mother comes by at night to close the door to the outside and turn out the lights. Even though her mother locks the building door the girl can still open and unlock the door.
This girl is only 15 years old. Should she still continue to enjoy this garage/garden shed or give up?
The girls garden shed door only opens to the outside. In order for her to get to the main house she has to open the door and walk outside through the backyard.
This girl enjoys this little place
This girl wants me to paint the inside of the shed with her. She wants to paint the inside walls which are just light wood on the inside. The door on the inside is a panel door that is just polished wood.
What colors should she paint the door and walls?
She feels closed in to sleep with the door closed. The mother comes to check on her to make sure she is asleep. The mother walks inside later at night to check on her.The girl lives in a safe area away from a city. She enjoys this becasue its like camping. The inside of the shed has a cott and a wood floor.
She enjoys the garden shed/cabin because she can hear the crickets at night and the birds in the morning.
The garden shed is almost like a camp cabin. It has a door with a doornob like a house would have. Unfortunatlry the windows are wooden shutters. This means that if you close the windows the cabin gets very dark inside.
The walls inside the cabin are woodfinish stained wood.
The cabin has no bathroom inside
The girl doesn’t mind that their is no bathroom inside. She would either go inside or go outside and rough it and go outside in the trees.

The girl would only sleep there in weekends. Maybe once a week at the most.

She is going to keep a key to both the cabin and the main house. The cabin is not in a tree its flat in the backyard.

The lock can be opened from the inside. The door and locks is like a regular home doornob. If the mother locks the door the girl can unlock it from the inside.
She lives in a country area. It doesn’t bother her that her mother comes to check on her.

Need advice about a neighbor that is upset with me, because I built a shed. It is on my property but she is up?

Any advice will be helpful live in a subdivision and have 1 acre. So I out up a garden shed and after I put it up I found out the neighbor is mad about where I put it. I checked with the association and all is well, about the type and size. I have around 00.00 in it so it is a nice shed. Now the neighbor will not even talk to me They have an above ground pool and drain it onto my property flooding the shed area and around my deck and garden. When I talked to them about it he more or less told me he can not do anything about it because I have a low area in my yard. I know that it is illegal to do this, I mean he can drain it onto the Ground but can’t flood someone else’s property. But he continues to do it. Now he will vacuum the pool and use a short hose and directs the water my way. He has a natural ditch in the back of their ward but refuses to use it. They also have friends who are cops so every time we leave the house we are being followed. Also we have only lived here for 4 yrs. so I am at the bottom of the good-ol-boy system. We Had this house built for our retirement and spent the money we saved for the house and property. I do not want to move but think the situation is only going to get worse. Any advice will be helpful. I do not wish to get my lawyer involved I think that will only add to the problem. I do not want to be retired and fighting with a neighbor. This is our dream home HELP My wife is partly disabled and loves to set in the yard and watch the birds rabbits and squirrels so they had security cameras put on their house and watch our every move. All of this for a 00.00 shed. They also had their lot surveyed and tell me not to get in their yard while mowing my own yard. I cannot call the police, as they are all friends and it does no good.

Would it be safe to sleep in a garden shed/treehouse at night?

June 25th, 2010 4 comments

In my backyard I’m thinking about building buying a garden shed mini cabin to sleep in on some summer nights. The shed would be in the backyard. One concern I have is someone breaking in late at night while inside. The shed I’m looking at buying has wood floors, small windows and a wood panel door. The door is a solid woodfinish on the inside and outside. The door has a handle instead of a doornob. This means the only way to lock the door is with a padlock either on the outside or on the indside.

The shed/mini cabin has woodfinish walls inside. I would be concerned about someone breaking one of the windows at night to break in.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
This would just be a place to sleep maybe at the most once a week.

To make myself feel more comfortable I would want to paint the walls and paint the inside of the door colors that I enjoy.
I would put an airmatress on the floor an
I don’t have a tree to put a treehouse on
The area where I live is safe. The garden shed mini cabin has a rustic cabin feel. The garden shed/cabin has no electricity and I would be able to hear the birds in the morning.
